Education and Work History

In December 2009, I graduated from the University of Missouri – Rolla with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering and a minor in Explosives Engineering. During the 2008-2009 school year, I was elected as President of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) and was also invited into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. I graduated in 3.5 years, Magna Cum Laude.

For about five years following graduation, I worked in engineering positions with Patriot Coal in Henderson, Kentucky. As an engineer, I interacted with people at all levels inside and outside the company. I’ve surveyed underground and on the surface, worked on mine maps and plans, requested and analyzed bids from consultants for engineering projects, and presented in various forums. My favorite experience with Patriot Coal was the opportunity to plan, arrange, and implement an Arbor Day celebration on reclaimed mine ground with local school children. The celebration was my own idea, so after gaining consent and a budget, I researched and developed games and scheduled and arranged for facilities and personnel. The event was a success for everyone involved - trees were planted and all parties garnered press with the local evening news.

In June of 2015 I started my education at the University of Kentucky and will graduate in May 2016 with a MBA degree. During this MBA program I have worked in a group as an intern with Valvoline and will be completing a marketing and supply chain project. I will also earn the Green Belt Six Sigma and Global Commerce and Strategy certifications. I am currently serving as the MBA Student Association president and team lead for the Valvoline group.

Personal

When I have the opportunity, I love to travel. I have been to Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and multiple places across America. I would love to add to my travel list in the years to come and explore different cultures and locales.

Event planning and actualization is a very satisfying process for me. I enjoy the creative process of planning the event: scheduling, thinking of potential pitfalls and planning accordingly, networking with potential vendors and attendees, and enjoying the accomplishment felt at the end of a successful event. This creative process was realized in the Arbor Day celebration I planned and implemented for Patriot Coal, as mentioned in Education and Work History. In college, I was the vanguard for a membership drive for SME (Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration). Our SME chapter received an award from the national chapter for the increase in members. I also planned a very successful blood drive in high school with the assistance of donations from a local Dominos and a Coca-Cola bottling plant.

My favorite non-profit organizations include the American Red Cross, Locks of Love, and Habitat for Humanity. Having known people who suffered from childhood or adult ailments, I cannot emphasize enough how important giving blood or donating hair is. One is a lifesaving tool and the other can grant a self-esteem boost to someone suffering from a life-altering illness. Habitat for Humanity is influential in the lives of many and provides volunteers the opportunity to meet the recipients in addition to letting them feel invested in their future home.

I love to read when I have free time. To me, reading is the pathway to other worlds, ideas, and cultures; you can never be poor when you have knowledge and an imagination. My dream library would look like the library in the castle of Beauty and the Beast, with large windows and even larger bookcases.
